THE CASE IN PLAIN ENGLISH

What happened?

A 62-year-old woman working in a field-based occupation presented with persistent left shoulder pain and functional limitation associated with rotator cuff syndrome. The report describes an individualised physiotherapy programme that included Maitland mobilisation.

Clinical findings

  • Chronic left shoulder pain with restricted functional mobility.
  • Assessment considered shoulder biomechanics and factors contributing to persistent symptoms.
  • The report followed pain and functional movement during the rehabilitation course.

Rehabilitation described in the report

  • A multimodal physiotherapy programme included Maitland mobilisation, stretching, strengthening, patient counselling and health-management education.
  • Exercise and manual therapy were tailored to the patient's presentation and tolerance.

Reported outcomes

  • The authors reported gradual reduction in discomfort and improvement in functional mobility during the treatment course.

Clinical lessons to consider

  • Manual therapy should be integrated with exercise and patient education rather than treated as a stand-alone solution.
  • Assess functional goals and individual contributing factors in persistent shoulder pain.

Limitations — what this case cannot tell us

  • Single case report without a control group or isolation of Maitland mobilisation.
  • The report cannot establish that the technique is superior to other shoulder rehabilitation approaches.
