Safety / do not apply when…
Unexplained unilateral swelling, warmth, redness or calf pain needs medical evaluation for possible thrombosis; do not massage until assessed.
Do not manipulate over acute muscle rupture, infection, fragile skin or a recent bleeding injury.
Watch for altered sensation, vascular symptoms or significant pain escalation.
Clinical rule
A technically correct technique is not automatically a useful technique. Keep it only when the patient's pain, range or function improves in a clinically meaningful way, then transfer that gain into active movement, loading or self-management.
